It was ground breaking day at the community Gardens at Christie Pits.  I was looking forward to getting my hands dirty, but I forgot just how much shovelling and moving dirt takes out of a person.   I have to say though I was very happy with the outcome once I had planted some lettuce and cabbage.  I also learned about the process of double digging.  You basically scrape off the top soil, dig out the clay, break up the sand underneath and then put the top soil back on.  This way the plants get more water.

I was only going to hang out for a little bit but it wasn’t long before I realized that I had been there for a couple of hours and there were still plants to get in the ground.  I hope to go back during their Tuesday nights and Saturday sessions to help out more.
