Hello my name is Derek Chadbourne and I am a candidate for Ward 19, or I guess I should say that I was a candidate for Ward 19. I am actually writing today to tell you that I am withdrawing from the councillor race.
There are a couple of reasons that I am withdrawing. The first is that I never wanted to be a politician, I just wanted to help people. I got into this whole thing because I felt that in the coming years a strong voice for pedestrians, cyclists, small business owners would be needed. I still feel that a strong voice is needed, but that there are some very competent people who are running for Joe Pantalone’s office who can do that job. I believe that whoever wins ward 19 will be a strong advocate for these people.
The second reason is that my business partner is leaving the Bike Joint and I have to look after my business and my employees. To try to run for office and the bike store would be a disservice to both.
The third reason is that as I went through the process of running for office, the idea of becoming a politician became less appealing to me. The thought of sitting in a council chamber listening to people go on about stuff I had no interest in made my eyes roll into the back of my head. I realized a good councillor should be interested in all concerns of the ward and not just their own personal concerns.
I feel my energy would be put to better use working outside the confines of city hall. One thing that I have learned from going out to all of these events and meeting residence associations and Park friends and such is that the politicians may appear to have the power, but the true power lies with the people.
I have always said how lucky I am to have met the people and groups that are doing such great work in Ward 19. You have reignited my need to become more involved in my community and for that I thank you.
So, I am going back to fixing bikes and help work on issues that are important to me, mostly bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian safety and the parks. So the next time you need help to roll pizzas, clean up parks or help out with all the great things happening in this ward, let me know and I will be happy to help out because I want to and not because I am looking for a vote.
